Middle school students often find reading uninteresting and boring; but with the right engaging novel, and with the resources for each student to have their own copy to read at home, I hope to make reading interesting and fun again! The novel Wonder by R.J. Palacio teaches students about empathy, kindness, courage, and diversity: all hallmark characteristics for a 21st-century student. When we read the novel Wonder, my students can experience Auggie's journey with him: learning how to be a middle school student, learning how to love yourself, and learning how empathy and kindness can really change the world! With a full grade-level set of novels, students can take the book home with them and read at their own pace. In a COVID-era, reducing the number of materials that we share is critical in ensuring the health and safety of students and families. Having this novel set can help my students participate in a rigorous, engaging curriculum while not jeopardizing their health and safety. Help me teach the novel Wonder to my "wonder"-ful students!
