The goal of my project is three fold. First, I want to expose students to diverse authors. Both of the books that I have selected are written by female authors, one of which is also Nigerian-American. Representation matters, and because of that, I'm so excited for my students to feel empowered by reading the stories written by these gifted women.
I also want to help grow a love for reading in my students. So much of traditional school curriculum involves informational texts and classic novels. My hope is to expose students to highly engaging texts that can help jumpstart an interest in reading. "Binti" and "All Systems Red" are both Hugo award winning science fiction novels and both highly engaging, beautifully written, and culturally relevant. I'm hopeful that for many students, this could be the book that they point back to, when they talk about a love for reading.
The last goal I have in this project is to help students grapple with our increasingly technological and futuristic world. In our project we will be simultaneously engaging futuristic stories and imagining new futures. In conjunction with reading the novels, students will be tasked with imagining and creating, and presenting future oriented laws that can help shape better futures.
