Students are more engaged and invested when they can relate to the text . I want my students to enjoy reading. By introducing them to characters that look like them or situations that they can relate to , will get them “ hooked “ Students need exposure to all kinds of literature . In schools we typically see literature that focuses on Caucasians. I want my students to see and learn about characters that look like them . There can be great conversations built around these novels and students will be able to have meaningful discussions with their classmates .
