As an educator of predominantly white students, I have come to understand that one of my top priorities is to teach my students how NOT to become white supremacists. This may sound a bit dramatic for some, however, teaching students to simply "be nice to everyone" does not promote the equity we need; rather it promotes the systemic racism that already exists. It is a moral imperative that we strive to create a society where ALL citizens are treated with equity. Clearly, this goal begins with educating our children. For the last four years, I have used the story from "Hidden Figures" to introduce students to our country's history of its treatment of people of color. It is time for me to begin to infuse more lessons with stories that spotlight the lives of BIPOC (Black Indigenous People of Color). "Return to Sender" is a wonderful book that illustrates the complex issues surrounding our country's dependence on undocumented people. Ultimately, I want students to engage in and openly discuss the complexities of race in our nation. Having a collective experience around reading the same story allows students to question and explore their thoughts around the issues of race.
