My project is to bring more diversity to our classroom library. 50% of children's books feature white main characters and 27% feature animals as the main character, leaving only 23% to represent every other nationality (CCBC, 2018). The books I have selected for this project feature main characters of other nationalities. I also selected books about children with disabilities, and about LGBTQ families. Our nation's demographics are constantly changing and it is never too early to teach students about diversity and empathy. Non-white students should be able to see themselves in the characters of the books they read and be able to relate to their stories. Help me show my students how beautiful and colorful our world is through diverse literature.
