I teach children that have IEPs addressing a variety of severe behavioral challenges due to past trauma. They require an environment away from the general education population supplied with supports that will assist in their transition back into the classroom with their peers. After years of being closed and with very few materials, I am rebuilding my school's Independent Learning Program in the middle of a pandemic. For almost a year, my students have gone without structured routines, social engagement, and classroom self-regulation at a time in school when this is most important. It is crucial that they come back to an atmosphere they want to be in, especially through these confusing circumstances. These alternative seating options and sensory items will allow me to reintroduce my students to a comfortable space where they will feel safe to work on social-emotional skills and take sensory breaks when needed. My hope is that they will want to learn to re-establish themselves as part of our community, and eventually use these in their general education classrooms when they are ready.
