There are two parts to this project. First, I want my kids to celebrate both their backgrounds and the backgrounds of their classmates. By purchasing a globe, they will be able see where they (and their classmates) are from on a global scale. Then, with the map we will show our diversity by using pushpins to highlight where we come from. The second part of the project includes a class set (10 books) of the novel "Under the Blood Red Sun" by Graham Salisbury. The book is set in Hawaii and covers the time period leading up to Pearl Harbor and the aftermath of the bombing. The racism against Japanese Americans and other Asian American communities is still being felt today. By reading about internment camps and the devastating toll they took on families, my students will see that history matters. If we plan to make a brighter future, we must learn from the past.
