These classroom sets of books were selected specifically to engage my middle school students in learning about slavery in America and the Hawaiian monarchy. The other books were selected to encourage the lower-level readers to read; the graphic novels appeal to these readers. The history book on slavery is a classic and was selected because the voices of these slaves are poignant; Frederick Douglass' narrative is beautifully written in spite of the horrors he endured. The Hawaiian monarchy book was selected because it is a comprehensive book that clearly shows the demise and relatively fast downfall of the Hawaiian kingdom; the rapid change in Hawaiian society within 150 years still affects the indigenous Hawaiians negatively today.
