Teaching and learning about history is a more enriching experience for students when they are holding a book in their hands and their minds are connecting with real-life characters they relate to in some way. The main character in Blood on the River, Samuel, appears to be a forgotten, lost, motherless boy boiling over with anger and rage due to his circumstances (students relate to Samuel from the onset). Given the chance to turn around his seeming misfortune, Samuel embarks on a dramatic, terrifying, uncertain journey that changes his life forever (again, students understand hardship). Students connect with the concepts of redemption, sacrifice, and faith that a person can change the course of their life when given a chance and the support of others. The glimpse into Samuel's daily life and the impact of European Colonization over several years sheds an unforgettable light on the devastation of Native populations and culture, and how American, as we know it, painstakingly came to be. In the end, students process an understanding and appreciation of the bloodshed, tragedy, and sacrifice that colors American history.
