My seniors will be reading a novel a quarter. This request is for the novel my seniors will be reading 4th quarter. Waves Are Calling is coming-of-age tale where the protagonist shuns parental and societal norms to follow his true passion of living in California, staying true to his studies to gain admission to his college of choice, and partake in his passion of surfing. The story begins with the protagonist shipped back East to Prep School. The story covers parental/child generational gaps, the delineation between blue nose East and Frontier West, cliquish groups that demoralize high school students, and how surfing helps the protagonist find his calling through all of this. The story takes place in close proximity to my school so students will recognize the locale. We will discuss the societal norms that take place and how one can overcome these issues in a positive manner. Students will be writing extensive essays on issues as we progress through the novel. We will review excerpts from the novel in class based upon the readings students have done at home the previous night. Students will be allowed to develop their own interpretation of the novel yet will be taking notes on other interpretations from other students to broaden their scope of the book.
