The days of students sitting at an individual desk, in an uncomfortable seat are gone. Flexible seating provides students the ability to choose a working condition which suits their needs. Some students benefit from the structure of sitting up at a desk, while other students need the flexibility to get comfortable on the ground.
Flexible seating is highly motivating for students. They are able to take control of their own learning. Research has shown many types of learners. Each type of learner benefits from different teaching styles and learning environments. Providing students with a variety of options increases the likelihood they will find a choice which matches their needs.
Throughout the school year students are gradually given the responsibility of choosing their best work environment. Flexible seating will be used during independent work times throughout the day to begin the school year and may completely replace a "home seat" as students learn classroom procedures and discover what works for them.
I look forward to watching my students discover which working conditions suits their individual learning style.
