My Spanish students are going to read every day... from day 1! How is this possible you ask? It's possible by having a class library full of books that are written for Spanish language learners that students actually want to read. My students will fill their heads with Spanish if they have books they are able to read and that are interesting to them. You'd be surprised to see high school students captivated by a short novel that contains only 100 unique words! They have so much pride showing in their faces because they are just in Spanish 1 but can read and understand a Spanish book, and not just a little kids' book. "Picking up word meanings by reading is 10 times faster than intensive vocabulary instruction" says Stephan Krashen, one of the premier researchers on second language learning. How many people took language classes in school? How much do they remember? The answer from most people is "not much." I am working really hard to make sure that my Spanish class is different! One of the main things I will be doing differently in my class is that we will read everyday. Reading is the #1 most efficient way to increase language skills. It's what we emphasize to little kids learning English and it is what I emphasize in my Spanish classes.
