Due to the continued pandemic, students will be learning both in school alongside full virtual classmates. All supplies will be a part of STEM library that will be used in the classroom AND then be lent out to students and their families for experiencing labs at home. Students spent most of last year in virtual classrooms with little experience with science labs and art. This project focuses on STEAM projects that document ongoing observation of geology, astronomy, biology and physical science. For example, students will begin the year by observing the changing night sky by studying the stars. Students will choose constellations, and be able to build a constellation that glows on their bedroom wall. Then they will observe and document the angle of viewing that constellation in the night sky above the horizon over the course of the quarter. Art supplies will be used to nature journal, student experiences, and printing supplies will be used to connect to printing techniques and patterns to tie in historical context with social studies for experience with history and culture. Moving into the next quarter, students will study geology, including the changes of earth, matter and kinds of energy. In Hawaii, students are familiar with igneous rock, but it is not culturally appropriate to collect this rock for closer study in our classroom. The the kids for comparison, and fossil samples will give hands-on relevance. The microscopes will be given to explore rock observations in class and in the field at home. The slinky will allow study of wave energy. Art supplies will be used to nature journal and document student observations. In the next quarter, students will continue their study of matter which will expand into the study of plants. Students will continue to use microscopes to analyze structures and cells.
