Over the next coupe of years, I will be helping our elementary students transform parts of their playground space into different gardens. They have been learning about the importance of sustainable farming living on Hawai'i islands and the impact healthy eating, especially of fruits and vegetables, have on our immune system. This project will help expose them to and most importantly give them their own experiences of starting and maintaining a sustainable edible farm. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the significance of teaching children healthy eating habits in efforts to maintain a strong immune system, as well as, the need to continue to be a part of a community. Having a garden that is based on edible plants will provide our students with opportunities to learn and taste a variety of foods. Gardening has also shown to be a great way to bring people together as they work towards common goals. It is a way to connect children with their environment and help them grow in stewardship and appreciation for our Earth. Another layer to this project is in the types of edible plants we'll have in our gardens. Because our islands are made up of people from a variety of countries, we will dedicate the different garden beds and locations to the edible plants that come from these specific regions. This will give our students a better sense of the unique diversity that make up our Hawaiian Islands and gain appreciation for all the different cultures. I'm excited to see how this project will encourage our kieki to be outside more often, explore their curiosities, and connect more deeply with others and their environment in healthy safe ways!
