Access to guided-reading books is NOT just necessary for elementary students. Secondary students bring language and literacy skills to the table. However, we MUST work hard to refine and strengthen those skills. We cannot pretend secondary students all magically have the proper skills to read and write once they get older. We cannot keep passing students through “the system,” hoping they’ll get better somehow. We are educators with a purpose and they are students with purpose. Guided-reading books and books on various (high and low) reading levels gives EVERY students confidence and a greater interest in becoming literate learners through repetition, consistent practice and resources, and a just/level playing field.
