To this day, some of my favorite memories from school were having my teachers read aloud to the class. My second grade teacher read aloud the Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner. I remember her reading the story to us on a Friday afternoon and leaving us on a cliff hanger! I went home and asked my mom to take me to the library where we checked out a copy of the book and finished it together that night! Thus began my lifelong love of reading!
Second grade is such a crucial time to instill the love of reading in a child. When a teacher reads aloud to the class, they are modeling good reading habits. When a student can follow along in the text, while hearing their teacher model good reading, their learning and understanding improve significantly. Student engagement increases and the experience becomes more focused and memorable.
Through this DonorsChoose project, I will be able to provide each student in my class with a copy of four incredible novels to follow along in as the I read aloud. Those novels include: The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner; The Magic Treehouse: Dinosaurs Before Dark by Mary Pope Osborne; The Secrets of Droon: The Hidden Stairs and the Magic Carpet by Tony Abbott; and The Bailey School Kids: Vampires Don't Wear Polka Dots by Debbie Dadey and Marcia Thornton Jones.
