The ages birth through 5 are known to be a critical time in brain development. Young children learn through active exploration which includes discovery, interaction and observation with their natural environment. This natural curiosity lends itself to scientific inquiry where children can develop and test theories in everyday situations. The manipulatives will be used to embed Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) opportunities throughout the day as a free choice hands-on center, teacher-led activities and small group instructional materials. All of the activities will be designed to support our current curriculum and Kansas Early learning Standards. STEM instruction also has been proven to strengthen understanding and application in literacy, language-building, math and executive functioning. Play is a powerful teaching method and is the way young children work. These materials would allow me to design center activities that address our Pre-K priority standards of speaking and listening, problem-solving and interpersonal relationships in an authentic, purposeful and playful way. Much of our social-emotional learning at school relates to self-regulation and learning empathy. Imaginative play provides opportunities for students to interact with peers and practice these important skills. The manipulatives would be shared by co-teaching teams and used with over 200 students ages 3-5 years. Each class has a combination of students who are regular education, special education and at-risk students. All teachers and students in our early childhood center will have access to these materials.
