Children grow and learn in environments that communicate warmth and safety. A rug in the classroom will help to convey these feelings during their first experience at school. I can imagine them listening to read alouds, acting out stories, reading with a partner, sharing a center basket, practicing social skills, for instance, how to make and be a friend, all while sitting on the rug. I had a rug in the past and it was the focal point and meeting area in the classroom. It was a place that the children seemed to automatically gravitate to on a daily basis. It was their favorite place in the classroom.
