Picture this: You're new to 2nd grade and about to walk in to your new classroom on the first day of school. You're excited and are thinking about what your new teacher's classroom looks like and the fun activities she has in store for you. The moment you walk into the classroom, however, you're disappointed. Even though there are tables and desks in the room for everyone to sit, the classroom isn't what you expected. The walls are bare. Papers are scattered everywhere. Pencils remain unsharpened. Organization does not exist. In a way, the room seems empty, dark, and gloomy. I don't want the first day of school to leave this sad impression on my kids that will last all year long. I want my first classroom to be full of life and excitement before the students arrive. I want to be sure there is a space where students can enjoy sitting on a soft rug during whole group and work station activities. Rather than having the classroom light on, I'd like to have it where we could enjoy sitting in a dark room where we have a soft and colorful floor lamp to show off the classroom. I want to be able to have all of my activities organized to where time is not spent looking for activities and supplies, taking away from student learning. Student engagement and learning takes place at day one. Having a classroom that shows it is well maintained and full of character is step one of the process to ensuring the year can and will be successful from beginning to end. I'm asking for your help in donating these items to help get my first year of teaching off to a fantastic start!
