This last year with distance learning was incredibly difficult for students! So many things were done on the computers and it was a challenge. Many students want to return to basics and be able to work using real books, using discussion, all the things they were not able to do last year. That is why my vision this year is to create super engaging and relevant lessons using dystopian fiction. We have basically been living a dystopian reality for the past year and this books will speak to some of these experiences and help students make sense of their Covid experience by seeing it in the bigger picture and by thinking about how they can help to make things better. Many of these books creatively twist difficult situations or focus on characters who changed the course of the future for the better. I believe that my students can gather inspiration from these stories and use these stories as models of how to be creative, change the world and succeed in the face of impossible situations--Much like they have all already done in this past year! These amazing books, that focus on different dystopian futures, will help students to process our reality (which at times feels like a dystopian one) and envision the change we so desperately need in our future. These stories will bring new worlds to kids, inspire them on important issues and hopefully push them to be the voices we need and the change we must have in this century!! It is my dream to include a dystopian novel unit and multiple books as this will bring new worlds and new ways of thinking into being.
