My students already have a heavy ELA curriculum that they struggle with daily. However, what they do not have are access to reading materials outside of that curriculum that excite and stimulate their hearts and brains. I will be making opportunities for reading that can cultivate a life-long love of reading throughout the day. By allowing them to have a classroom library, they will learn how to use and navigate that process even though they are not provided that opportunity by the school as a whole. With COVIID, students are restricted to limited spaces in the building. Last year, when students did approach the limited supply of books I had been provided, they did not see anything that excited them, related to them, or looked like them on my shelves. As a first year teacher I recognized that they needed the skills in even how to pick out a book. Now, going into my second year, I am determined to do right by them by having a classroom library that can not only be a reflection of them and their experiences, it can lead to self-development and growth. I want my kids to be excited by a full bookshelf, to feel confident searching for a book to read, and to have had the experience of loving literature outside of the constructs of ELA class time. Reading gets easier and more attainable when it is something an individual enjoys doing.
