Students come into my office looking for support for a variety of emotional needs. Unfortunately, last year took away a lot of what made my office feel comfortable and welcoming due to the social distancing requirements. In an effort to bring back some of that comfortability in my room, I want to create a new comfortable seating option that would allow students to feel relaxed and comfortable. When they feel that, then they can feel more inclined to open up and put in the work to help their emotional needs. I want to put a small sofa in my room that would go underneath the window to create a peaceful therapeutic setting. My hope is that they can physically feel comfortable while they are in a vulnerable state as mental health is just as important as physical health.
Too many times while I am helping one student, I have another student (or sometimes even staff) looking to connect with me outside my door. My hope with a small table is that I can put that outside my room to hold a "Message for Ms. McCabe" mailbox, but also provide some other resources for students to take until I am able to reach them. At least the ability for students to write out a quick message will help release some of the stress or frustrations they are having at the moment.
With your help, I can better ensure that students have a comfortable setting to be vulnerable and the ability to connect with me even when I am not available at the moment. Any and all support is appreciated in helping me reach this goal for my students!
