As many students have been stuck inside, in front of screens, this Garden Club will provide them with the time and space to enjoy each other and nature. I am an Intensive Reading instructor and will tie lessons from all of their core classes into this after-school club. I will introduce them to literature that has been influenced by gardens and love for outdoors. The raised bed garden is in disrepair so we will use the weed cloth and staples to reestablish the torn weed barrier, using math to figure the surface area of the space. Many of the students are recent immigrants and their families have agricultural backgrounds, we will use the Florida climate to grow various indigenous crops, exploring the links between food and culture. The purpose of each hand tool will be demonstrated and explained as they develop their gardening skillset. The stakes and jute will be used to trellis plants while they monitor and record growth rates, environmental factors, and nutrition output - pure science! Donations to our Garden Club will help to provide these students with a deeper connection to various cultures, nature, conservation and responsibility as they become environmental stewards. As a Title I school our students can experience scarcity, this extracurricular club will provide them with the lifelong skills of growing their own food, the joys of nurturing life and observing the dynamic world all around them.
