Through a variety of books representative of all students, I give my class opportunities to fully engage and collaborate in literacy labs to express a range of content learning and understanding. In the "Create Lab", students use a variety of art media to create character puppets and settings to role play story elements and events. In this lab, not only are students challenged creatively, but it addresses development of fine motor skills. In the "Engineer Lab", students again collaborate and develop problem-solving skills as they come together as scientists, engineers, designers and inventors. In the "Imagine Lab", through content-connected play and storytelling, students develop vital skills of negotiation, decision-making, social interaction and executive functioning. In the "Research Lab", students have the opportunity to expand their understanding and knowledge through a range of research activities: additional grade level books, appropriate computer search engines, etc. In the "Explore Lab", students have the opportunity to learn first by doing. Students handle authentic objects as they are allowed to make meaning of abstract ideas through hands-on activities. Unfortunately, because of the threat of COVID, many of my lab supplies that normally would have been shared, were given out to individual students to comply with COVID safety protocols. It seems the threat of COVID is still looming over us and again, I will need to give students individual supplies to continue to keep them safe and yet, conduct a productive, progressing, engaging, education. I appreciate all who are able to contribute to my efforts.
