There's never been a better time for middle-grade readers to see themselves represented in fiction or to learn about other people and places through engaging stories. However, like most schools, our selection of novels for sixth grade reading groups is limited and outdated. I believe that books can change hearts, minds, and lives, and I want to give my students the opportunity to connect with others through reading. This project will provide several titles each in the genres of realistic fiction, science fiction, and historical fiction that students will use for independent reading and small group discussion. For each genre, students will also work collaboratively to give book talk presentations that will encourage their classmates to read their group's book. Research shows that students are more likely to read when they have access to interesting, high-quality books, and the ability to share what they are reading with others. Updating our reading group novels will motivate students to read, and impact not just these classes, but classes for years to come.
