Science is a major subject covered in the 5th grade. Project Base Learning is a relatively new approach to teaching but is considered an important way of having students learn. With the use of hands on projects students become more engaged in their educational process. Bringing real world example into the students lives can be very impactful. The ocean plays a circuital roll in Hawaii and students should have to opportunity to learn about it. Using the scientific method students will be creating a project that they will collect data and present their findings on at the end of the semester. All students living in Hawaii are surrounded by the ocean, and it is important they they learn about their local habitats. Students will be learning how to follow the Scientific method to create a project. Using specific journals the students will make observation and come up with a question and hypothesis that they will then take data to support their findings. One of the steps in this method is taking data, students will be doing this use the water quality tests kits as well as using a salinity refractometers. These water quality kits will be testing for levels of pH, salinity, alkalinity, HO2 as well as Oxygen levels in the water. Students will be learning about the difference between fresh and salt water. Knowing the type of water they are working with can impact the organisms that are found in that habitat. This project will have students learning about the marine ecosystems, which will building on previous knowledge and how to apply it.
