Sensory challenges can affect the student’s ability to take in information, respond to requests and questions, participate in the social world around them, read, write, complete math computations and maintain a calm state. When a student is unable to regulate the sensory input they are receiving, they respond with feelings of anxiety, stress, and being overwhelmed. By providing students with an environment and tools within the classroom to help them regulate this input we will be able to not only focus more on classroom learning but we will also be able to aid students in learning strategies and techniques to begin to independently regulate the way they process the world around them! Students will use the sensory tent when they are receiving too much stimulation. They will be able to go into the tent and have a dark and quiet space within the classroom where they can use some of the tools from this project such as the various chairs and lights, white noise machines, and scented stuffed animals to soothe themselves. Sometimes students (and all of us really!) need a little pick-me-up to get them going again! An area will also be set up outside of the tent for this purpose. Students will have access to items such as familiar books, music, sensory sand, water beads and assorted fidgits to assist them in reenergizing themselves.
