The Covid19 global pandemic has reshaped our schools, our communities, and our economy. Physical distance, masking, and small groups are essential for maintaining safe, covid-free schools. It has also shed new light on Hawaii's dependence on imports from abroad, highlighting the need for increased focus on cultural, economic, and environmental sustainability. In response to these challenges, Wai'alae School has hired me as the Outdoor Ed teacher. My goals are to: 1) design and implement outdoor, gardening, and nutrition lessons with a lens of stewardship for Grades PreK-5; 2) enhance Wai’alae’s integrated thematic units and inquiry-based curriculum through school gardens, composting projects, nutrition, and agricultural literacy; 3) immerse students in experiences that enhance a sense of self and place, both locally and globally; 4) build a foundation of self-confidence, collaboration, problem-solving, social responsibility, independence, awareness, exploration, and inspiration; 5) enable students to form a meaningful relationship with the natural world.
