This book would be an excellent text for whole-class study in my classroom. Last year, my students expressed their desire to read a graphic novel. This type of text challenges students to make meaning in ways different from the traditional text. Persepolis explores ideas of family, war, and discovering one's self. My students want to read about new ideas. Having a class set would allow for a unit that builds reading skills, encourages research into new topics, and provides opportunities to share new ways of seeing the world. Students would be able to express their ideas in both textual and artistic ways while tackling new and complex ideas.
