In my math classroom, we utilize a flipped classroom model where students watch their lesson videos at home and come to school to work on the "assignment." I like to say that they learn at home and they work through that learning in the classroom where I am easily accessible. I started following this model before the pandemic hit and shocked the world. This flipped classroom model works great when followed correctly, however, I run into many issues with students whose 1:1 devices are dead, who didn't watch the video at home, or do not own headphones to be able to watch the lesson video in class. This causes many problems with student work completion, assignment equity, and on-task work time. --A student who did not watch the lesson video can't really work through the learning they didn't get in their video. --A student whose 1:1 device is dead can't access the online learning materials. --A student whose 1:1 device has a charge but does not own a pair of headphones wouldn't be able to privately watch the lesson without disrupting and drawing attention from their peers. --A student who does not have a handheld calculator will spend more time switching back and forth between Schoology and an online free calculator than is needed. With the help of classroom-use calculators, headphones, and multiple charging stations around the room I believe that these issues could disappear. How GREAT would that be?! If I have the ability and the means to provide all students with equitable access to the technology needs they have, student understanding and confidence would boost to a level that couldn't be achieved without them. These materials would allow them more classtime to work hard and be successful in math class. I think that would be pretty great!!
