After our Title 1 School was shut down to the Covid-19 Pandemic, my classroom and all the materials students use to learn hands-on sat untouched. When we were finally able to return to reduced in-person learning the following year, many shared materials and surfaces had to be removed from the classroom include our classroom rug. In my first-grade classroom, the rug is one of the most used items. It is where we gather for morning meeting and class announcements, where students listen to stories and discuss with their buddy, play games, and just get to relax and interact with one another as kids. During virtual instruction, students only had short opportunities to interact with one another. These peer relations are a crucial part of learning and growing. Being back in the classroom for face-to-face instruction this year with more knowledge about the pandemic and safety protocols means our classroom rug can return! Our current rug has seen better days and does not allow for spacing between students on the carpet. With your support, our classroom will have a brand-new classroom rug that allows for students to work together, learn together, and create lasting positive memories in first grade.
