Students take care of things when those things are not falling apart. Our classroom pressboard shelving is over 10 years old and crumbling. At this point, when janitors wax the floors, they don't even move them out of the way for fear they will fall apart if they are even touched. When my classroom looks this way, it is hard to motivate students to take care of the supplies we have because, when they look around, it looks as if we aren't prioritizing our classroom. Students will find it is easier to find what they need when our supplies are organized on clean, new, functional shelving. My budding artists have many choices when it comes to supplies and tools, but with the current shelving situation, they tend to stick to the same supplies in the same areas because they've seen shelves fall apart when other students grabbed supplies. I want my artists to have the most functional, easily accessible, organized studio as possible. Instead of focusing on crumbling shelves, I want them to focus on their creativity and making magical creations for the world to enjoy.
