I would like to have students engage in hands-on investigative work, taking temperature readings for class investigations covering real-world issues impacting them personally--including global and regional climate change and the urban heat island effect. I hope to provide my students with the opportunity to use infrared temperature reader technology to collect infrared temperature data of various materials and surfaces and in different environments, which they can then analyze and interpret in order to develop potential solutions to these problems. These class investigations will occur during our Physical Science 8 units on Energy and Waves. Our school district is the most diverse in the state of Washington and the 5th most diverse in the nation, with the majority of our students qualifying for our free and reduced lunch program. It is a well-understood fact that minoritized populations experience the impacts of regional and global climate change, as well as the urban heat island effect, at disproportionately higher rates than non-minoritized populations. My hope is that by helping students build a "knowledge bridge" between science and social issues that matter to them, they will develop greater feelings of social empowerment and belongingness to their community. Thank you so much for helping support my students' learning!
