When students feel safe and connected to school, they have better attendance, higher academic achievement and are more likely to graduate. My goal, as the school social worker, is to create a safe and calming space to be utilized by students and staff; providing sensory activities, comfortable seating and lighting, and a quiet place to emotionally regulate in a safe place. The space will provide an environment that encourages self awareness and self management skills, reducing anxiety, anger, and stress, allowing for personal and academic growth. Compassion Fatigue, Burn out and Secondary Traumatic stress are common risks for educators working with populations whom have experienced adversity and trauma. Our staff are hard working and dedicated to the students. This safe space will also be for them. To decompress, relax and reduce the risk of Compassion Fatigue, Burn-Out and Secondary Traumatic Stress.
