My scientists and mathematicians benefit from engaging in literacy activities beyond their reading class. Whiteboards are an engaging way for us to show our math thinking and expand on it with explanations and justification. We love to quickly share our thinking with our partners, table groups, or whole class while jotting steps and ideas-but our current markers and erasers have some miles on them! We also love Gail Gibbons books for all of our science units. She has beautiful illustrations that motivate even the most timid of readers, while also providing rich non-fiction text features and deep scientific information. In general, my students struggle with literacy. Bringing reading and writing into our science and math classroom will benefit students in every subject in their 5th grade year, but also instill in them the importance of literacy beyond just a reading classroom.
