These books will enhance my already, print-rich classroom. My goal is to provide the diverse group of students I teach with books that include characters from all different backgrounds. The students in our learning environment will be able to read about and see characters like themselves. It will also allow them to read about characters who do not mirror the same cultural and physical characteristics. Not only will these books be readily available for the students in my homeroom but they will be shared amongst the building, reaching all students in grades k-4.
I will spotlight different titles and characters, biweekly, showcasing the books setting and characteristics, specific to the character's culture. I will share these books with families, so they too, can enjoy the diverse literature virtually at home.
Students will write reflections after each title, connecting to the characters, while also explaining how differences and how those unique qualities make our environments so much richer.
