Our preschoolers have Autism Spectrum Disorder and benefit from learning through tactile and sensory exploration. Items like tents, tunnels, and trampolines, gives students an appropriate and safe "escape" if they feel they need a break or need to calm down. Sensory activities like kinetic sand, poke-a-dot books, and foam paint are some of our students favorite types of activities! It gets their attention, keeps them focused, engaged, and calm so that they can learn and make progress towards their goals. Many of our students have unique sensory needs and sensory items allows us to find creative ways to teach lessons. For example, this week are learning about ocean animals. Rather than just watching videos of animals or playing with ocean animal toys, we can put them in the bin of blue sensory beads and have them find the animals (receptive language), name the animals (expressive language), practice animal sounds, imitate actions with them, take turns, and more! The possibilities are endless.
