Flexible seating allows even young children to learn how they can do their best work. By having seating choices in the classroom, kids can take control of their learning. If adults use standing desks and yoga balls in their work environments, why shouldn't we offer the same for students? Having a variety of seating helps meet different student needs. Some students prefer to spread out on the floor instead of sitting at a desk. If they have wobble seat cushions, pillows, or yoga mats, they can make their own comfortable space. Using kick bands around chair legs allows students to bounce their feet so they can move while working at their desks. When I have flexible seating options, I can tell my students are much more excited about their school work. They take pride in having the independence to choose their working space, which leads them to put more pride into their work. I know what a great difference flexible seating makes in a classroom, and I hope I can bring that difference to my kindergartners!
