The best resource a student can have is a copy they can annotate in. If each student has their personal copy, they will be able to make unlimited annotations and highlight. I plan to make this a book they can turn to long after we've finished reading it as we make connections to other texts. I teach my students to focus on lessons in life as well as the curriculum when we read a novel. If they get to keep this book as they enter high school, it will be a rich resource filled with their authentic personal connections as well as notes. As a teacher, being able to get students to write about what they've read using textual evidence is a dream come true. If I could, I would have all students purchase every novel we read in class. This award-winning novel will serve that purpose.
