We are building a new environment for my unique group of elementary students from square one. Some are recovering from trauma, while others are neuro-divergent. They perceive their environment and relationships with adults with hypersensitivity. It is an honor for me to be entrusted with this small but mighty group of little souls. Fidgets to reduce anxiety (while also learning multiplication), and a sensory-soothing environment will create a comforting sanctuary where the children have a home away from home. Social emotional learning strategies taught with relatable social stories and safety protocols will be a priority. The main goal is to build trust, letting the students to know they are safe, understood, and loved!
