At our school, not only do we teach academics, we also teach vocational skills such as making beds, washing/folding/putting away laundry, cleaning/dusting/vacuuming, and cooking. During labs, students practice math skills, reading skills, cooperative learning, following directions, and many other important life skills. Not only will these skills potentially help find them a job, but they are also skills they need as adults. We have supplies for most of our labs because we can use what our custodians use. We also have plenty of clothes that people have donated to practice folding and putting away, but when it comes to our kitchen, it's pretty barren. We're often left digging through drawers or going from room to room asking other teachers if they have something we can borrow. If we had a fully stocked kitchen, our students would be able to learn and do more!
