If my project is funded I will be able to use these novels to help make the standards come to life. Relatable and powerful stories, to foster a love of reading. In Sophia's War, they will read about a girl who is their age and understand exactly what it was like to be a rebel and how she fought to stay alive. They will learn about compassion for others in Because of Mr. Terupt, which is written like a journal and tells each character's point of view. Where the Red Fern Grows will teach them about dialects and figurative language. We will use literacy circles to make connections and strengthen comprehension and writing. This could be used in the classroom, as well as, remotely if a need for remote learning should arise.
