First graders need to practice writing A LOT! They need to be able to make mistakes and practice putting their pencils to the paper. They need to be able to write in all subjects, so we go through a lot of paper. While we use technology often, handwriting is a critical skill for first graders because it helps establish the connection between letters and words. Strong writers are strong readers, so I need quite a bit of paper to give them opportunities to write. Colored paper helps keep things interesting and grabs the attention of parents when I send messages home.
