I teach in whole group, small group and individual center time. Whole group introduces a lesson and demonstrates to the students how the new toys, games are to be used. After using our SMART board, some children will be able to use the same programs on the iPad to further explore and interact with the lessons. My non verbal children enjoy this as they have an immediate verbal response as the applications they access will allow. Small groups give the students options to interact with the materials with direct supervision from the teacher. Some children prefer books, others small sensory toys that have the ability to change as the child uses it like light sources and movement. Children with Autism enjoy these materials. The students are then able to take the learning games and toys for individual play or buddy play as desired. I have multiple centers. A water table for children that like to play in water as a calming tool and alphabet items in the water with soap and sponges to not only play with but recognize and learn letters. Math centers that have cause and effect toys. Key in lock games, as requested, will enhance the child’s ability to solve problems. I use their center time to play with them, assess their abilities and learning growth. Hands on learning is very important in a Prek classroom.
