These high-quality picture books will serve as mentor texts in our first writing unit of the school year. Students will both be able to enjoy listening to this wide variety of read-alouds in the classroom, while also utilizing them to help improve their own writing skills. These texts are exemplars of the personal narrative genre. Students will analyze these texts and apply the skills they learn in their own personal narratives. Having these texts readily available in the classroom will allow students to revisit them on their own to learn from them again and again. As well, this list of texts includes characters from a variety of races and backgrounds, allowing students to experience texts as mirrors, windows, and sliding doors.
