I have been a secondary school counselor in Westfield, MA since 1998. I have spent the past 6 years in Middle School. Those were my hardest years as a social being, and things have not gotten easier for this generation. I see each students "great," but at this age, they often armor up and do not have the confidence, resources or perspective to be comfortable in their own skin. A safe and positive environment is essential for students to be available for learning. I have access this year to a small classroom and want to create an equitable and inclusive space where I can run groups and teach regulatory and social skills. In my new space that will be furnished through this project, I will offer: *Check In Check Out opportunities for students impacted by trauma and students who require this accommodation based on 504 plans or IEP's. * Reintegration lunch groups for students who were remote during the 20-21 school year who need to practice social skills or need a smaller, quieter environment during lunch. *Run groups to help students recognize and challenge cognitive distortions. *Provide space and instruction for self-regulatory skill acquisition. *Teach executive functioning skills and provide after-school opportunities for homework help.
