There is a problem with math education in the US... students are giving steps to follow or procedure and don't think or understand why they are doing the steps. Then... come a time they need to actually do math, they get stuck... I want to create Thinkers... math thinkers, problem solvers, and students that can collaborate in groups. To do this, students will be in random groups solving math tasks on VNPS (Vertical Non-Permanent Surface) or really a whiteboard. The reason for vertical is there is more accountability and the teacher can see what is going on at each group and see which groups need more facilitating than others. The non-permanent part is so the kids aren't scared about correct/incorrect because it can be erased. While the work is going on, if students get to an acceptable point in the thinking task, the teacher will give some other tasks to continue the group's work through the concept. All the while, the teacher is monitoring, and groups are able to get help from other groups as well. It's a win-win for all! Students are learning at their own pace, getting help from their peers, teacher is monitoring and enriching groups that are ready and guiding groups that need more help. All engaged, all learning, all thinking!
