Even though students have experienced the weather around them, many struggle to understand why the weather changes the way it does. This project expands students' knowledge far beyond a general understanding of what weather is and what they are experiencing at the moment. Why is raining today but it didn't yesterday? Why do we have a "hurricane season". How do meteorologists know that conditions are favorable for a tornado? Do you think it might rain on our field trip next week? These are all questions students can answer when they learn to understand the weather. Students will use real weather monitoring equipment, video resources, and simulations in a hands-on learning experience to discover how small changes in temperature, wind speed, pressure, etc can cause big changes to the weather in our area and even become young meteorologists who can predict weather patterns themselves.
