My name is Katie Mellott, and I teach second grade at a Title I in Jasper, Alabama. This will be my fifth year teaching, but my third year in second grade. To say second grade is my JAM is an understatement. I love second grade so so much! Alabama is a "Science of Reading State." Therefore, it is my goal to incorporate as many hands-on activities that I can for my students in reading to help build their literacy. I have taught at my school system’s literacy camp this summer for students who are needing to meet critical benchmarks to be prepared for the fall. I have had the sweetest group of second graders. Not only have they learned and soared SO MUCH this summer, but I have learned a lot as well. As I’ve put the Science of Reading into action and seen the results, I have concluded the imperative need for my regular classroom to have more hands-on activities to help build literacy through nonsense word practice, sight word practice, word building, word reading, nonsense word fluency, etc. I have been shared an abundance of information and best practices to apply. I cannot wait to put these practices into action in my classroom. However, I need several materials to make this happen! I want my babies to have everything they need to be able to excel this school year and become the great readers they are destined to be. I have seen firsthand how well these practices have worked this summer and data backs it up! Not only does it work, but my babies have loved it this summer. I’m ready to instill a love of reading in my students and have the same success this school year with building literacy!
