About half of my students were virtual learners last year and were unable to receive any additional texts to read beyond class assignments. As they are transitioning back to in-person learning, they will need engaging books that allow them to enhance their social understandings while they are in a key developmental phase in their life. When my students were asked what topics they enjoyed most from last year, many mentioned Black Lives Matter, Latinx social issues, and Asian hate crimes. My students crave diversity and socially relevant topics in their learning. They are developing into passionate change-makers at an early age and need text that supports this significant mission. Additionally, 96% of my students are Latinx or students of color and it is incredibly important for them to see themselves and other multicultural identities in the text that they read. This helps them feel more involved with their own learning and enhances their sense of importance not only in the classroom but in the world.
